Ebi Constitution we go Chop: An Examination of Article 1(1) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana
Abstract
This lecture, titled "Ebi Constitution We Go Chop: An Examination of Article 1(1) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana," forms part of a broader project, "The 1992 Constitution: An Article a Day." The project seeks to provide a detailed analysis of each of the 299 articles and 37 transitional provisions of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, examining them textually, contextually, historically, teleologically, comparatively, practically, popularly, and futuristically. Particular focus is placed on the historical development of Article 1(1), with comparative insights drawn from the constitutions of the United Kingdom, the United States, India, South Africa, and Cuba. These comparisons explore the colonial influences, the ideological foundations, and the practical lessons Ghana’s Constitution could have embraced. Delivered as part of a year-long public engagement initiative, the paper invites scrutiny and discussion, seeking to make constitutional discourse more accessible and participatory among Ghanaians.
